Exhibition Pure Gold – Upcycled! Upgraded! at the MKG Hamburg The MKG Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg is hosting an exhibition focused on the theme of waste, with nine approaches to processing material to create something of greater value. A digital platform is also being offered to create an international network of makers.

The MKG (Museum of Art and Crafts) in Hamburg is hosting the exhibition called “Pure Gold – Upcycled! Upgraded!” from 14 September 2017. The exhibition explores the international design trends as a response to how to treat waste and cheap materials to make something that is of greater value and long-lasting, and therefore more sustainable.
A global theme, which is why, as part of the 100th-anniversary celebrations of the establishment of ifa - the German institute for foreign affairs, the exhibition in Hamburg is the start of a ten-year tour of the world. Looking at it in terms of the global impact of waste, ifa organised the exhibition along the lines of an innovative and co-creative format that involves a team of curators from seven regions who are showcasing 76, new-generation works by designers who work ethically and ecologically. Because although we're finally starting to notice the terrible effects of all the plastic waste in our oceans (link), our daily relationship with waste is only changing very slowly. So the exhibition shows us solutions from lots of different perspectives, particularly upcycling where already processed material is reused as the raw material to craft new objects and create value, giving room to alternative production techniques and to the evolution of European and global design.
The works on exhibition start with materials that are apparently of little value, they mix and match different objects in unconventional ways, or they craft collateral products with a creative kick to turn what used to be thrown out into “pure gold”. The designers include Indian duo Sahil & Sartak, known to our readers for the projects attentive to raw materials (link).
In addition to the exhibition “Pure Gold – Upcycled! Upgraded!” Axel Kufus, designer and professor at the Berlin University of the Arts is offering a digital platform that will serve as a growing repository of knowledge and a network for the international maker scene.
After Hamburg, “Pure Gold – Upcycled! Upgraded!” will head to Bangkok (Thailand), Yangon (Myanmar), Hanoi  (Vietnam) and Manila (Philippines)..
