“Tell me who your photographer is and I'll tell you how far you can go”. This statement takes on an importance that very few can elude in this third millennium - the era of visual digital communication or of images - and that is even more significant for some disciplines, including built architecture.
In this sense, the exhibition “Fernando Guerra A Photography Praxis under X-Ray” dedicated to the Portuguese architect and running at the Cultural Centre of Belem in Lisbon is a great chance to find out more about one of the world's most influential photographers of contemporary architecture - six of his photos are part of MoMA's permanent collection. He also has the distinction of spreading the work of many Portuguese architects, including maestros like Àlvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura as well as not so famous studios (link), through the pictures he took of their architecture as from the mid-Nineties.
Fernando Guerra spreads the word - or rather the photos - through Últimas Reportagens, the go-to virtual platform on the international scene. He was born in 1970, graduated with a degree in architecture in 1993, then spent years working as an architecture and professor until he founded FG+SG studio  15 years ago, with his architect brother Sergio.
A perfect partnership to create and narrate architecture, taking advantage of the new channels offered by the media and by digital technology. The exhibition presents a map of the studio's activities and of Guerra's photographic work and tells the story of his creative path. Basically, as the title says, visitors get to see his work like an X-ray and have the opportunity to grasp the importance of a consistent visual language that manages to transmit architecture in a captivating and direct manner, to the point that insiders immediately recognise Fernando Guerra's special touch in his photographs.
If you want to explore and learn more about Guerra and his work, he is running a photography workshop on 22 and 23 September, again in Garagem Sul, Cultural Centre of Belem.
