Damien Hirst, Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable (part 2) Our review of the exhibition “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable” by British artist Damien Hirst in Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, Venice continues. A technicolour journey through the fantastic world of Cif Amotan II.

We don't want to reveal too many details of this exhibition but we really recommend a visit in person. Let's just say that Hirst doesn't lack ironic references - some almost showing off, others are just plain fun, like the “Five Grecian Nudes” in Punta della Dogana that so clearly look like Barbie dolls or a person in a jacket holding Mickey Mouse by the hand. Without mentioning the over 18-metre tall demon, who welcomes visitors at the entrance of Palazzo Grassi (link YouTube), , to all appearances bronze but actually made from resin, or the “ancient” drawings signed “In this dream” (there's an anagrammed message here like in the collector’s name, Cif Amotan II).
“Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable” plays with the different layers of reality, the non-linear time of our contemporary age, and with the joy of discovery. Hirst's extravagant exhibition - which we really liked because it celebrates the playful, joyful aspect of his art - takes us on a colourful, fantastic, exciting journey. We just wish we could have seen the expression on his face if, like us, he had overheard a small group of visitors who couldn't make up their minds about the “truth”, until they saw photos and videos and exclaimed, “Oh, well, it is all true then, they videoed the recovery of the sunken treasure!”
