Carbon Negative Cement absorbs CO2

Carbon Negative Cement, developed by Novacem, represents a greener alternative to regular cement, which is responsible for the emission of large quantities of carbon dioxide. The calcium carbonates used in ordinary cement formulation are replaced with magnesium silicates in a low-temperature production process fuelled by biomass. And all while achieving parity of performance and cost!

Its revolutionary sustainable characteristics earned carbon zero cement Material ConneXion’s MEDIUM award for material of the year in 2010, and was showcased along with nine other honorable mentions projects earlier this year.

According to Dr. Andrew H. Dent, Vice President of Material ConneXion, “With a simple change of ingredient, Novacem has achieved what could be one of the single largest reductions in CO2 emissions in construction to date. This carbon negative cement reduces carbon emissions of poured concrete from 800kg emitted per ton to 50kg absorbed per ton.” In fact, rather than producing carbon dioxide, it absorbs it as it hardens.

This extraordinary material has the potential to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of the building industry in the years to come, and we hope to see many more like it.
