Berlin celebrates the 25th anniversary of the fall of the wall The hashtag #fallofthewall25 sums up the many initiatives being held in Berlin to celebrate the peaceful revolution leading to the fall of the wall in 1989. One of the events is the light installation titled LICHTGRENZE, border of light.

The Berlin Wall fell on 9 November 1989 and from 7 to 9 November 2014 the city symbolising the division of Germany has organised a series of events to mark the 25th anniversary of this moment in history.

The installation LICHTGRENZE, border of light, is certainly one of the most spectacular of the many events. The light installation is the brainchild of Marc and Christopher Bauder, and it uses 8000 illuminated helium balloons to mark the course of the wall: for 3 days, Berlin will again be divided, from Bornholmer Straße through Mauerpark and the Bernauer Straße memorial at the Reichstag, hugging the Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie to the East Side Gallery.

An artistic, poetic way of recreating the brutality of the wall, and whose visual power will again bring to life memories, images and more importantly awareness of the peaceful, civil revolution in 1989 that led to the reunification of Germany.

The LICHTGRENZE installation will be accompanied by a number of collateral events, including the opening of the new permanent exhibition, “1961-1989. The Berlin Wall” in the Berliner Mauer memorial and an open-air exhibition curated by Robert Havemann Gesellschaft - “100 Wall Stories in the original locations”.

Urban art and its many forms become the bearers of values, memories, and hope because they engage through the universal and immediate language of visual communication.
