The issue of sustainability doesn’t just end with the choice of materials and certification by dedicated bodies, it lies in the fact that a given building can be sustained, and supported, by its actual location.

A few weeks ago, we took a look at Merrion Cricket Club (link) in Ireland, a clubhouse built in a flood zone, now we’re examining the Alvega Canoeing Center, project by the Portuguese multidisciplinary platform,
ateliermob which has been operating in the fields of architecture, design and urban planning in Lisbon since 2005.

The Alvega Canoeing Center was built on stilts and stands on the same site as the earlier, flood-damaged structure. The stilts keep the footprint to a minimum and the building protected from the water, and the continuous skin of recycled black plastic profiles around the three separate volumes – cafeteria, canoe storage and changing rooms – brings together the perception of the canoeing centre as a whole, and at the same time allows floodwater to flow through. So Ateliermob has designed a fully sustainable building for its location.

Still, the actual project dates back 5 years, but thanks to the photographic story created by Portuguese photographer, Francisco Noguiera a few weeks ago, it is currently going through a kind of renaissance on the web, again confirming the importance of the photographer in communicating the architecture in the web era.
