Architecture Triennale in Lisbon. Civic Swing by estudio SIC
The Lisbon Architecture Triennale entitled “Close, closer” not only explores architecture in its strictest sense, it focuses on urban design. The centrepiece of the public programme is called New Publics and one of its participants is Spanish-based studio SIC, which uses Golf as its urban design tool.

Golf is not a sport”. So begins the press release of Spanish architecture firm estudio SIC, presenting its Civic Swing, initiative as part of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale.

With their project to revitalize disused areas in Amsterdam (http://www.floornature.com/blog/andldquogreeningandrdquo-the-city-temporary-urban-action-8876/) Dutch-based NL.Architects also showed how powerful the game of golf is as an urban design tool. The new approach to urban design aims for a sustainable future, where collective elements are created to promote the quality of living.

So, Spanish architecture firm, estudio SIC, that has always been attentive to the relationship of the city with its territory, has come up with the project called “Civic Swing: First Golf Master Series DIY - DIWO” in Lisbon, on Praça da Figueira, where people can play golf on their own (do-it-yourself) or with others (do-it-with-others).

A concept that goes beyond sport as simply a physical activity and focuses on its social and participatory aspect. So, the people who play golf can re-appropriate and explore their city.

The idea of the designers is that if inhabitants play golf, the community might become more involved in decisions concerning their spaces – and the city is returned to the citizens.
