Alila Villas Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia - environmental and social sustainability
A resort in Bali pursues environmental and social sustainability

This 5 star resort development on the southern coast of Bali, Indonesia, designed by award-winning architectural studio WOHA (Singapore), includes 34 bungalows and a hotel with 40 suites.

The complex, which opened in June 2009, draws on Bali’s rich culture and traditions and is designed to minimise its long-term ecological “footprint” by following the guidelines of ”Environmentally Sustainable Design” (ESD), using local materials, recycling wastewater, using seawater in the swimming pools and planting native local species raised in its own nurseries.

The building has won several well-known awards - the Green Good Design Award 2009 presented by The Chicago Athenaeum and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, the 2010 Design for Asia Award, the 2010 World Architecture Festival and the 2011 RIBA International Awards, to mention only a few.

The hotel’s focus on social concerns is officially recognised in EarthCheck certification (in the Silver category) which not only guarantees environmental sustainability but assesses the ethical and social performance of a resort complex of this kind, with respect for the local population and culture.

According to the studio’s founders Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell: “Each project should result in ongoing improvement of the built environment and create desirable places.”.

Why not try it out for yourself?
