A viewing platform to reconnect man, nature and history. The architectural and landscape design for a pavilion-roof deck and viewing platform on the island of Krievkalna in Latvia by architects Didzis Jaunzems and Laura Laudere offers visitors the miraculously healing powers of nature as part of “The Garden of Destiny”.

The winner of an international architecture competition and project of the year in the Latvian Architecture Best Works Award 2013 fits sleekly into its setting – Krievkalna Island on the Daugava River.

This project is designed to blend in completely with the natural environment, inviting visitors to drink in the surroundings. Part of the reason it fits in so beautifully is the decision to use larch wood, treated with a mechanical process to make it non-slip and also used on the pavilion roof deck.

The viewing platform and pavilion/deck are part of “The Garden of Destiny” memorial park honouring all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, Latvia.

Completed with the help of donations from the general public, this construction has turned into the garden’s prime attraction and is a very popular location for ceremonies. Thus repaying the young architects for their work, which engages closely and harmoniously with both nature and people.
