A home on lake Rupanco. Izquierdo Lehmann. The project by Chilean architecture firm, Izquierdo Lehmann for a home on lake Rupanco in Chile uses local materials to create a building that is an extension of the landscape.

Lake Rupanco is situated 900 km south of Santiago de Chile and forms the setting for a low-set building located on a gentle slope on its right bank. The habitable spaces progress horizontally, giving all the rooms lake views and connecting them at the back by a covered walkway, but opening onto a patio partly interred in the slope.

The design choices of the architects – opting for the consummate local materials of wood and stone – means the building easily fits into the lake landscape. The architects have created visual continuity with the surroundings, at the same time keeping visual and environmental impact to a minimum!

This decision is emphasised by the shape of the wall that curves around the patio, following the line of the meadow, in turn marked by the home’s green roof. The same grass that grows around the building has been planted on the roof.

The entire pavilion has been designed to reduce the building’s environmental footprint. Concrete is only used for the fireplace and dividing walls, lightening the load on the wood frame.

The Izquierdo Lehmann practice again stresses its vocation for a design philosophy that seeks to reconcile nature with architecture.
