A holiday steeped in the history of modern architecture: “Tautes Heim”, Berlin
A destination for modern architecture lovers who want to have a 1920s style holiday experience in a housing estate that was UNESCO world heritage listed in 2008: Bruno Taut's “Hufeisensiedlung” (horseshoe estate) in Berlin.

The home is living testimony of the history of modern architecture and of the Bauhaus style, located in the Hufeisensiedlung, a horseshoe-shaped housing estate built between 1925 and 1930 and designed by Bruno Taut, Marin Wagner and landscape architect Leberecht Migge.

The present owners, landscape architect Katrin Lesser and graphic designer Ben Buschfeld, have turned “Tautes Heim” (a play on the German phrase “Trautes Heim – Glück allein” meaning “Home Sweet Home”) into a holiday home, giving its guests a real experience of the lifestyle back then.

This is not a museum, it is a home where holidaymakers are surrounded by the furnishings and colours of the time, strictly following Bruno Taut's original ideas. This operation required careful research into - and analysis of - the original colours, whose positive results include pleasant surprises like the blue ceiling in the kitchen.

The furnishings were also carefully designed, so guests can enjoy such things as built-in fireplaces with ceramic tiles in the bright colours of the period. The home includes a garden and patio for guests to relax in.

The owners did all the design work themselves, including the roof insulation, following the guidelines for the protection of architectural heritage and it was brought to life with the assistance of experts and renovators.

Not only that, but it is within walking distance of the underground station making it easy for guests to go sightseeing and to uncover other treasures of Berlin, architectural and non, using sustainable public transport.
