The Danish architects of BIG studios have won the international competition for the design of a new Waste to Energy plant for transforming Copenhagen’s wastes into energy. The plant will also give the city of Copenhagen two new ski trails, thanks to the sloped surface, which will be made accessible to citizens and visitors with an elevator up the stack with views of the construction’s interior. Every time a ton of CO2 is released into the atmosphere, the smokestack will give off a ring of smoke 30 cm in diameter, lit up by a special ray of light at night. It is intended to be a warning signal to encourage citizens to be aware of energy consumption and ecological issues. The plant is due to be completed by 2016.
