"HOT TO COLD An Odyssey of Architectural Adaptation", an exhibition about the work of the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) which opened recently at DAM Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt, is a voyage around the world through BIG’s architecture.
In this case architecture refers not only to the buildings themselves but to the parts of the cityscape or landscape in which they stand, complex systems blending structure and environment. From the torrid heat of the Arabian desert (HOT) to the freezing tundra of Finland (Cold), BIG’s projects are presented in order by site temperature, helping visitors understand how climate and culture influence design. For while in extreme climates the principal goal determining the form of a building is providing shelter from the heat or the cold to permit life, in temperate climates cultural and political factors also have a voice in determining architectural style.
The exhibition organised by the National Building Museum in Washington includes photographs by Iwan Baan and other architecture photographers, numerous materials including architectural models and prototypes, and videos in which visitors can discover how life goes on inside and outside buildings designed by BIG.
