Well-known modern and contemporary art gallery owner Ernst Beyeler has dedicated forty years to putting together his outstanding collection of art, holding exceptional exhibitions that have amazed visitors all over the world.

Beyeler Foundation Museum in Riehen, Basel, 1991-1997. Renzo Piano Over the years the collector has managed to get together about 160 works by prominent twentieth century artists, and he needed a space to keep his collection and protect it appropriately.
Having come to an agreement with the town of Riehen, just outside Basel, Beyeler himself financed the construction of the building which was to house his important art collection.

The architect behind the project, Renzo Piano, came up with a building of modest height that fits into its setting as discretely as possible, creating a perfect balance between indoor exhibition spaces and the outdoor environment.
The clients wanted to make the building a place for innovation, for interaction with the public, rather than a conventional museum used solely as a display space.
