Winner of an international competition upon invitation, French architect Jean Marie Charpentier designed the Shanghai Opera House inaugurated on August 25, 1998.

Arte, Jean Marie Charpentier et Associés: Shanghai Opera House, China, 1998 The main facades form a clear glass box that allows people on the street to view the spaces the audience go through to reach the foyers, restaurants, and boutiques arranged around the central 1,800 seat auditorium with its 3,700 square metre stage. And this is where we find the first link with tradition: it is quite clear how the architect wanted to project the structural fabric of the pillars onto the outside of the building through the large panes of glass.
And as in buildings of the past, the Shanghai Opera House strives upwards toward the heavens, a strong symbol of spirituality and refinement of composition.
Fascination with the symbolic and striving for the essential have transferred Charpentier's project from west to east, translating three-dimensional architecture into a conceptual sign.
