Arcosanti, Paolo Soleri's utopia

Paolo Soleri,

USA,

Exhibition Center,

An urban laboratory: this is Soleri's definition of Arcosanti, the city he planned and built to test an alternative to current forms of urban development.

Arcosanti, Paolo Soleri's utopia Both buildings have a strong visual impact defining two spatial configurations: the interior, acting as a container, and the exterior, creating detachment.
Two large barrel vaults echo the same curvaceous forms in the centre of Arcosanti. Here too, interior and exterior form a structure which interacts with its natural and urban surroundings: visitors can climb up to the big vault and look out over the landscape, or enjoy the shade below.

In this utopian city that has become reality, Soleri has created a form of settlement based not only on issues of energy conservation, land use, and optimal use of time but also a consciousness of living and creating urban spaces that has been developed over thousands of years but looks toward the future.
From the organisation of space to social relationships, Arcosanti is an emblematic experience of everything that is living.
