Davis Brody Bond 9/11 Memorial Museum - New York

The National September 11 Memorial Museum designed by Davis Brody Bond was inaugurated by President Obama on May 21 2014.
The museum is built entirely underground, in what used to be the foundations of the Twin Towers in Manhattan, the centre of New York, connected with Ground Zero via an entrance pavilion designed by Snøhetta, already discussed in Floornature.

The architects of Davis Brody Bond designed the museum spaces on the basis of 4 key guidelines: memory, authenticity, scale (of construction) and emotion, and took into account a number of geometric elements already existing in the area. These key references became part of a coherent design based on a visitors’ route leading slightly downward, the "ribbon". As visitors follow the ribbon, they progressively rediscover various different elements of the collective memory. The ribbon itself recalls the ramp used to remove detritus from the area, and concludes at the stairway that many of the survivors used to escape. The route culminates in two exhibition spaces, primarily the foundation hall, the size of which impresses upon visitors the vastness of what was destroyed on September 11 2001.
