Architecture and Landscape at the Sony World Photography Awards

An exhibition of the work of the award-winning entrants in the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards is underway in London until May 7, in the first leg on its tour. The international professional photography contest held by the World Photography Organisation for photography professionals and students saw the submission of fully 227,000 photos from 183 different countries. We took a look at the winners in the categories most relevant to the themes addressed in Floornature, starting with the photographer of the year: Frederik Buyckx of Belgium, and his "Whiteout" series, winner in the Landscape section.

Frederik Buyckx’s photographs taken in the Balkans, Scandinavia and Central Asia capture the transformation of the landscape when winter comes, when snow and ice seem to eliminate all human and animal traces. The photographer calls his work a study of the effort required not to disappear. The prize awarded to Frederik Buyckx’s photograph is, according to the chair of the jury Zelda Cheatle, an invitation to take another look at the landscape, often neglected despite its essential importance in human existence, and an invitation to return to simplicity in looking at a photography, capturing aspects of joy and beauty everywhere, not only at the salient moments in life.

The winner in the Architecture category is photographer Dongni (China) for his space&city series looking at the geometry of contemporary cities. Tim Cornbill (UK) won the Open section of the Architecture category for individual images with Oculus. Martin Parr, the famous photographer from the agency strong>Magnum Photos, was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Photography award for lifetime achievement.
