Architect Li Xiaodong’s project combines a number of different functions in a single space: it’s a bridge, a school, a social centre for adults and a children’s playground. The project has won a prize in the 2010 WA Chinese Architecture Awards 2010 and an Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The judges noted the structure’s lightness in comparison with the two nearby tulous – traditional circular structures used as fortresses – and its playful aspect, which makes children see it as one big playground. The judges particularly appreciated the fact that the school/bridge establishes harmonious, symbolic relationships on a number of levels: temporal unity between past and present, formal unity between tradition and modernity, spatial unity between the two banks of the river, social unity between communities which can sometimes see one another as rivals and unity with the future.
