8 House, BIG Bjarke Ingels

Copenhagen, Denmark,

Residences, Factories, Store,

A residential and commercial complex built in the shape of an 8 has just been completed in Copenhagen, including a cycle path and a pedestrian path going up to the tenth floor.

8 House, BIG Bjarke Ingels The name 8 House reflects the building’s plan in the form of an 8. The project built in Copenhagen by BIG architectural studios is one of Denmark’s biggest residential and commercial developments. One unusual feature of the project is a continuous cycling and pedestrian path rising from the ground floor to the tenth floor, with access to all the residences. The complex is arranged around two courtyards divided up by the cross-shaped central construction containing common service areas. The buildings have different heights to allow them to make the most of natural light. The architects hoped to build not a traditional residential and shopping block but an urban neighbourhood in horizontal layers, with three different types of homes and shops all linked by a continuous pedestrian and cycle path.
