A visit to the Alvaro Siza. Viagem Sem Programa exhibition at FAB Castellarano

“A.Siza – Arqt°.” Greta Ruffino and Raul Betti, the exhibition curators, have chosen the image of an intercom with the names of important Portuguese architects to welcome visitors to the exhibition “Alvaro Siza. Viagem Sem Programa”. We ring the bell and enter the FAB Fiandre Architectural Bureau Castellarano, the gallery-showroom of the Fiandre Architectural Surfaces brand. Here, until 7th July, you can visit the exhibition that presents the more private and less well-known side of Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza by appointment.

Large photos by the Portuguese architect, printed on adhesive film, create a pathway through the surfaces of theFAB and lead us towards the heart of the exhibition. From the large, bright entry hall, we move to a smaller space with prevalently darker shades. Finally, down a narrow corridor, which lets us glimpse something, we come to a bright space where porcelain surfaces by Fiandre create the elements needed for the exhibition. The display, by Dumbo Design Studio, has exploited the spaces and surfaces of the FAB to create a physical pathway that also prepares us emotionally for thisintimate portrait”. The exhibition contains over 50 drawings by Siza, displayed on lecterns created with Fiandre slabs and accompanied by writings, travel notes, photographic material and the architect’s small everyday objects. The video screening of an interview filmed in Portugal, which can be seen in a nearby room, ends the exhibition and we have ideally arrived in Alvaro Siza’s studio. In the architect’s own words, we hear the tale of the intimate relationship that he has had with drawing ever since childhood.
