Trina Merry - New York Series

Trina Merry - New York Series Trina Merry uses body painting to create connections between the human body and its surrounding environment in a game of mimesis and constant metamorphosis.

Trina Merry chose the streets of the Big Apple to represent the human necessity to camouflage themselves, in order to withstand the chaotic and aggressive life in big cities. The idea of the project came to her when Trina moved from San Francisco to New York. I wanted to engage the city and understand it and make some observations”. In her eyes, this work is a tribute to all the women in New York who feel the need to dress up and disappear from the world that surrounds them to get through daily life. The artist does this by, “blending the soft and fleshy female bodies of her models with bodypaint into the rigid and phallic skyscrapers that inhabit the city".
However, much more can be read into her work. Trina Merry establishes ensuring ties, describes life through the backdrop she is working on and gives the metropolis a human side, all at the same time.
In her work all the chaos and speed of the urban dimension, but also the tranquillity and peace of certain views, are attributed to human life precisely due to juxtaposition and mimesis. Each image captures a temporary moment in life and breath of the model and the ground she is standing on,” Merry says. “It is a reminder of who and what we are is in a constant state of metamorphosis."
In the New York Series photographs it is not understood whether the artist's canvas is the city or the human being, whether what is being portrayed are the rigid lines of the architecture or the soft curves of the female body. The two elements merge together giving life to something that transcends and goes beyond either part, perfectly representing the daily level of connection between an urban fabric and its inhabitants. We can say that Trina Merry makes the metropolis human and the human being a metropolis.
