16 projects selected for the RIBA International Awards for Excellence 2021

A major modern art museum in Shanghai and a new entrance building and visitor centre to the Museum Island in Berlin, a pedestrian and cycle bridge through the heart of Copenhagen, a beautiful artists’ home in Sri Lanka, a new hospital where the healing power of nature becomes a central element: these are just a few of the sixteen architectures selected for the RIBA International Awards for Excellence 2021, the important biennial awards handed out by the Royal Institute of British Architects. In November, the winner of the RIBA International Prize 2021 will be selected from these sixteen finalist projects.

The winning projects stand out for their ability to demonstrate great sensitivity, care and respect.

MoDusArchitects presents new entrance and extension of the Novacella Abbey Museum.

On June 4, the museum of the Novacella Abbey was inaugurated, following the completion of the renovation works designed by MoDusArchitects, consisting of the new entrance and the extension to the museum complex. The architects had the challenging task of working with a highly heterogeneous structure, with elements dating back to the different architectural eras of the abbey and, thanks to the incisive work carried out, they were able to create a harmonious new space, with a view towards the future.

MAXXI L'Aquila Museum opens its doors

After Rome, the MAXXI National Museum of 21st Century Arts has a new home in L'Aquila (in the Abruzzo region), which opened its doors to the public on May 28th. A research centre and a new hub of contemporary art and creativity, as well as a collaborative project between various national and international institutions which, through culture, aim to support the relaunch of a territory severely tested by the 2009 earthquake and, over the past year, by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Museum's inaugural exhibition entitled “POINT OF EQUILIBRIUM. Thought Space Light from Toyo Ito to Ettore Spalletti” presents eight new site-specific works, which dialogue with 60 iconic works from the MAXXI's permanent collection.

Munch Museum in Oslo designed by estudio Herreros opening soon

On October 22, 2021 the largest collection in the world of works by the iconic Norwegian artist Edvard Munch will be open to visitors in the new Munch Museum in Oslo. Work on the new structure designed by the estudio Herreros firm has been completed and during a live-streamed event director Stein Olav Henrichsen presented the museum to the press and announced the opening date. The new Munch Museum will house more than 26,000 works that the famous Norwegian artist bequeathed to the city of Oslo, with a strong commitment to demonstrate just how important and lasting Edvard Munch’s influence has been on society, as well as on young contemporary artists.

Snøhetta and Chatillon Architectes at the Musée Carnavalet in Paris

On May 29, 2021, after a long and extensive four-year restoration, the Musée Carnavalet in Paris reopened to the public. The renovation project was carried out by the Snøhetta and Chatillon Architectes firms. The renovated museum offers an enhanced visitors’ experience, providing a unique opportunity to travel through time to discover Paris’ rich history – a story told through the museum’s large collection of artefacts.
