RMJM Evolution Tower Moscow

Moscow, Russia,

Skyscraper,

Constructed by architectural studio RMJM in partnership with Scottish artist Karen Forbes, the Evolution Tower is an unusual spiral-shaped skyscraper in Moscow’s business district on the banks of the Moskva River.

RMJM Evolution Tower Moscow

RMJM designed Evolution Tower in Moscow’s main business district on the Moskva River. The project was built in partnership with Scottish artist Karen Forbes, and though the floor plan is reminiscent of the traditional square shape of offices and commercial buildings, the vertical shape of the skyscraper is highly unusual.
On the vertical axis, the building twists significantly, with a total rotation of 156 degrees clockwise around its own axis. This rotation gives the building a spiral shape, a clear visual reference to the DNA molecule and therefore to human evolution, hence the nickname "Evolution Tower".
The skyscraper had been shortlisted for Best Tall Building Europe 2015 because of the extreme torsion of the tower, which exceeds that of any other tower ever constructed. Each floor in the building is rotated three degrees in relation to the floor below it. The architects say they drew their inspiration from the shape of a sculpture by French artist Auguste Rodin, “The Kiss”, in which two human figures are entwined in an embrace.
