Helsinki as seen by Hugo Soo
Young photographer Hugo Soo, winner of the photograph category in Next Landmark 2013, the international contest held by floornature.com, tells the story of the trip to Helsinki he was awarded in the contest through images full of light, people and architecture.
His photos stand out for the constant presence of the human figure, seen in relation to architecture and nature. In his photographs the objects themselves, such as a glass or a bicycle, are capable of representing their location, its atmosphere, and the city around it. It is interesting to note how Hugo Soo manages to capture reality in his shots, transforming them into documents of architecture as it is experienced, full of light and shadow. The freshness of this photographer, who, like a photoreporter, savours what is going on around him and establishes a relationship between it and inhabited space, makes visible, through the design of the image, the proportion that is established between the observer, the person photographed, the building, nature, and the objects that complete it all.
Hugo Soo is not looking for easy photographic sensations created using unusual perspectives or deserted cities, but for reality as we experience it in inhabited space. As he himself has said: "as a photographer, I think a good travel photograph ought to celebrate the local lifestyle and culture as expressions of architecture".
