Zaha Hadid winds the RIBA 2016 Royal Gold Medal

A new first for architect Zaha Hadid: after being the first woman to receive the Pritzker Prize in 2004 she will become the first female architect to be awarded a Royal Gold Medal, the prestigious prize presented by RIBA, the Royal Institute of British Architects, to architects "whose work has promoted either directly or indirectly the advancement of architecture".
The prize first awarded in 1848 has been presented over the course of its history to architects: Frank Gehry (2000), Norman Foster (1983), Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1959), Le Corbusier (1953), Frank Lloyd Wright (1941) and George Gilbert Scott (1859).
Jane Duncan, Chair of RIBA and of the jury awarding the prize, notes that Zaha Hadid has had a key influence on the world of architecture as a whole, affecting all fields of design from buildings to furniture, automobiles and fashion.

Architect Zaha Hadid has been awarded plenty of prizes over the course of her career, winning the RIBA Stirling Prize for two years in a row, in 2010 for MAXXI, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome and in 2011 for Evelyn Grace Academy in London.
