Water and light: a century of renewable energy for local development exhibition

The photographs taken from the historic photo archives of Fondazione Aem - Gruppo A2A represent the hydroelectric projects that have permitted the modernisation of the city of Milan and the region of Lombardy over the past half century while optimising use of energy resources.
The exhibition is divided into three sections: "the power of water: energy for the growth of the metropolis", "A celebration of modernity" and "The hydroelectric landscape in Valtellina".

The images illustrate the evolution of energy in the twentieth century, starting with the mountains of the Valtellina, where water was channelled into paths and dams to become energy, to the city of Milan, where it becomes light, a symbol of social, scientific and economic progress, and then return to the Valtellina to document the evolution of the mountain landscape through the “marks ” made by hydroelectric projects on the land.
The photographs are by important historical and contemporary Italian photographers, including Vincenzo Aragozzini, Antonio Paoletti, Guglielmo Chiolini, Gianni Berengo Gardin, Luigi Bussolati and Francesco Radino.
