UNStudio of the Netherlands has officially unveiled its plans for the new Kutaisi airport before the authorities and Georgia’s President Mikheil Saakashvili.

UNStudio, Kutaisi Airport
The plan for the new airport in Kutaisi, Georgia was officially unveiled at the end of November 2011, and construction is due to be completed in September 2012.

UNStudio architect Ben van Berkel says that the plan for the new airport was based primarily on consideration of travellers? experience. The architects wanted to create an inviting, secure place that would establish a connection with both international visitors and the local population. The airport is in fact intended to be a gateway for the international community in view of Kutaisi?s role as the new seat of Georgia?s parliament.

The volume of the airport building is arranged around a central empty space for passengers with clearly distinguished routes for arrivals and departures. The spaces are arranged in a way which takes into account their context, incorporating views of the Caucasus and the city; the architects pick up on and reinterpret a number of elements of the Georgian architectural tradition.
