The best of the week: skyscrapers and towers

At the end of 2014 the exhibition “Grattanuvole. Un Secolo di Grattacieli a Milano””Scraping the clouds: A century of skyscrapers in Milan”) drew attention to the changes in the skyline of the city of Milan following construction of a number of skyscrapers since the beginning of the 20th century. Skyscrapers are the buildings that define a city’s skyline, symbols of innovation, on the cutting edge of building techniques and technologies, technical systems and materials engineering.

The most recent new highrise constructions presented in Floornature include one of Italy’s most advanced projects, the Bosco Verticale or Vertical Forest designed by Boeri studio, winner of the International Highrise Award 2014, built in Milan. The Best Tall Building Worldwide, an award presented by the CTBUH (the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat), went to One Central Park, a highrise designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel in Sydney. The tallest skyscraper in Europe is The Shard in London, designed by Renzo Piano, while the tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa, previously known as the Burj Dubai, designed by SOM (Skidmore, Owings and Merrill).
Unusual skyscrapers include The Interlace by OMA in Singapore and Dubai’s Cayan Tower by SOM, also known as the Infinity Tower.
