The German Design Council, established in 1953 by initiative of the German parliament, organised the Iconic Awards for the first time in 2013, to expressly acknowledge architecture and design icons of our times, which stand out by their cross-disciplinary nature, and that add beauty to our lives.
The independent jury, formed of experts in the architecture, interior design and communication sectors, selected the Merano 2000 cable car station by Roland Baldi architects as the winner in the architecture category.
Infrastructural architecture that becomes an iconic landmark in a natural landscape of rare beauty. Rather than seeking to camouflage itself, this striking mountain station makes a proud statement with its red cube. The project blends form and function with the mountain environment, making for a really unforgettable cable car outing.
Roland Baldi architects will be awarded the prize on 6 October 2014 at the BMW Welt in Munich.
