Nicolas Moreau + Hiroko Kusunoki Helsinki Guggenheim Museum

The international design competition for the new Helsinki Guggenheim Museum has closed. The chair of the jury, Mark Wigley, a professor of architecture at Columbia University, has announced the winning project, selected from among six finalists shortlisted out of more than 1700 entrants from 77 different countries. The winning project is "Art in the City" by architects Nicolas Moreau and Hiroko Kusunoki of Moreau Kusunoki Architectes in Paris.

In "Art in the City" architects Nicolas Moreau e Hiroko Kusunoki imagine a museum complex, not a single building: a set-up incorporating a number of different pavilions and plazas linked by an internal road. The complex will consist of 9 low pavilions and a lighthouse tower. A series of pedestrian pathways such as the path along South Harbor and the walkway between the lighthouse tower and Observatory Park will link the new structures with the existing ones.

The jury particularly appreciated the winning project’s deep respect for the place and non-hierarchic organisation of the pavilions, which will become a meeting-point for art and society in Helsinki, a concept expressed in the name of the project, "Art in the City".
