Messner Mountain Museum Zaha Hadid Architects

The Messner Mountain Museum Corones has been completed and is due to be inaugurated on July 23. Starting on July 24 the public will be able to visit the sixth museum dedicated to the famous mountain-climber Reinhold Messner, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. The museum is all about rock walls and is set in the evocative natural setting of the Dolomites at Plan de Corones, 2275 metres above sea level. The architects underlined the panorama with a fluid form of architecture that fits into its context.
The construction of the Messner Mountain Museum Corones appears to be an extension of the rock, where nature plays an essential role; the architects preferred an underground construction that would blend into the rock, with only the entrance visible from outside. Inside, the staircases to the three levels of exhibition space look like waterfalls dug into the bowels of the mountain.
Cement, which the architects chose as the only material for the surfaces in view, helps the museum blend into its surroundings with its natural colour, evoking a typical mountain landscape. The building was constructed to comply with high energy standards, and the CasaClima climate certification agency in Bolzano has certified it as a class CasaClima A building.
