Heike Hanada: Monumente exhibition, Architektur Galerie Berlin
The exhibition that opened recently at the Architektur Galerie in Berlin reveals what Heike Hanada, architect and instructor at Potsdam School of Architecture, means by the term “monument”. Hanada sees the word in terms of a building’s architectural quality, its distinguishing feature: characteristics that do not arise directly out of the use and dimensions of materials but are determined by the spatial composition and proportions of the parts in the architectural project.
In her projects, architect Heike Hanada has repeatedly dealt with “monuments” of particular architectural and historic value. In 2008 she won the first prize in the international architecture competition for expansion of Stockholm Public Library, designed by Erik Gunnar Asplund, and in 2012 (with Benedict Tonon) she won the competition for the new Bauhaus Museum in Weimar, due to be completed in 2018. At the 14th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, “Fundamentals” under curator Rem Koolhaas, she worked with architect Jan Kleihues on the design of the German pavilion.
