Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have designed a new stadium in Africa: Tripoli National Stadium, in the new athletic park that is to host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. A new project in Africa for the gmp team, which designed three stadiums in South Africa for the 2010 World Cup.
With a design that completes and reinforces the historic identity of the place, the new stadium is intended to become a new landmark in the city.
The number three inherent in the name of the city (Tripoli= tri-polis= city of three) is evoked in the design elements and triangular architectural composition of the facility.
Three basic architectural elements make up the project: the base on which the structure stands, the curved main body and the roof, supported by three big arches spanning the entire stadium.
