Gianni Berengo Gardin Venice and the Big Ships exhibition

The exhibition Venice and the Big Ships includes thirty photographs taken in 2013 and 2014 by Gianni Berengo Gardin, one of Italy’s most prominent photographers, testifying to his times by documenting the daily passage of big cruise ships through the lagoon.
The exhibition, held in the Olivetti store designed by Carlo Scarpa in Piazza San Marco, Venice, is organised by FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano in partnership with Fondazione Forma per la Fotografia e Contrasto and curated by Alessandra Mauro.

Gianni Berengo Gardin’s photographs, all in black and white, underline the contrast between the reality and the urban dimension of Venice, which appears to be "destroyed in its proportions and transformed into a little toy" in relation to the abnormal size of the big cruise ships.

The passage of big ships in the Venetian lagoon is a major problem for the city, inexorably recalling the need to practice sustainable tourism. The exhibition offers an opportunity for FAI to draw the attention of the general public to the theme of "the excesses of tourism" that afflicts so many of Italy’s historical cities and locations.
