CF Møller Technical Faculty, University of Southern Denmark

The building containing the Technical Faculty at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Odense, Denmark, designed by C. F. Møller Architects, is a big glass envelope covered with decorative fibre-reinforced concrete panels.
The building may in fact be interpreted as an envelope containing 5 buildings linked by bridges on different levels . The central core of the construction, which the architects describe as an “item of furniture”, contains all the common areas and meeting rooms, provides access to a roof garden with a coffee shop and serves as an informal gathering place for students. The building’s form and the materials used in it, bare concrete and corten steel, offer a contemporary reinterpretation of the Brutalist architecture of the campus designed by architects Krohn & Hartvig Rasmussen in the seventies.
The walls are covered with white panels of CRC (Compact Reinforced Composite), a particular type of high-performance fibre-reinforced concrete offering an example of the type of new material the research laboratories in the four different institutes housed in the building are working on. The design of the façade is created from 7 different panels combining circles of different diameters, arranged to produce a sunbreak effect without limiting the view of the greenery around the building from any point within it.
