BIG Miami Beach Convention Center project

BIG architectural studio presents its plans for Miami Beach Convention Center, a project for which the practice founded by Bjarke Ingels will be competing against Rem Koolhaas’s OMA.

The proposal presented by BIG was prepared by a team which also included John Portman & Associates , West8 and Fentress Architects architectural studios, Portman Holdings and CMC Group, as well as Cirque du Soleil as consultants for the events space on the site.

BIG’s plan involves replacement of the existing empty space, "a black hole of asphalt" as architect Bjarke Ingels calls it, with a lively public plaza including greenery, parks and gardens with pedestrian pathways linking the convention centre with the buildings around it. The project also includes construction of new services, a hotel, renovation of Jackie Gleason theatre and creation of an open-air arena to house a museum of Latin American culture.
