Makoto Tanijiri Lodge, Hiroshima, Japan
In designing the Lodge salon, architect Makoto Tanijiri of the Japanese studios Suppose Design Office first got rid of the classic concept of the styling salon. He then defined the environment by dividing it into an open space and a closed space. This subdivision into two areas, like the closure, is in actual fact only apparent, created thanks to a mirror surface suspended at a height level with the heads of clients seated on the chairs in the salon. The strip of metal suspended in space encloses the hairstyling and cutting area, separating it from the entrance and waiting areas.
The fact that clients cannot see beyond the mirror gives them a sense ofprivacy while at the same time allowing the stylists, who see from a different height, to see what is going on all over the salon.
The salon is completed with simple light wood furnishings, neon lights and bare cement surfaces.
