Mirror Houses by PPArchitecture: luxury in Bolzano
The Mirror Houses are a pair of holiday homes surrounded by the apple orchards near Bolzano in the Dolomites of the Tyrol. Designed by Peter Pitchler Architecture of England, the two residential units appear identical, but the volumes are staggered to lighten up and break down their structure.
Both homes face east, resting on terraces raised above ground level. These features, along with thebig panes of glass continuing on the side walls, encourage enjoyment of the breath-taking view not as if it were a picture on the wall, but from within it.
The building materials, the lighting, the all-white interiors and the big windows give the homes a bold contemporary look, while their western walls, covered with mirrors, reflect their green surroundings and the landowner’s home. The opposed architectural styles are not put in competition: the mirrors ensure that the traditional and contemporary buildings fit together harmoniously.
