The AIA Honor Award for Interior Architecture goes to Davis Brody Bond for the 9/11 Memorial Museum

The September 11 2001 Memorial Museum designed by Davis Brody Bond has won a number of awards, most recently the 2015 National AIA Honor Award for Interior Architecture.

The judges emphasised the complexity of the project built in Manhattan under the 9/11 Memorial del World Trade Center, both in structural terms and because of its inevitable emotional components.
The architects of Davis Brody Bond seek to come up with a response to the difficult conditions of the site, the need to preserve the various existing geometries and transform them into a consistent series of spaces, and the responsibility of interpreting strong national sentiment to provide museum visitors with a respectful, informative, sensitive experience.
Architect Steven M. Davis explains that in view of the site’s historic importance and all that it stands for, it was essential to find the right balance between collective sentiment and individual experience, and that the 9/11 Memorial Museum project is based on four key points: memory, authenticity, scale and emotion.
