The retrofit and extension of a home built in the sixties in the historic village of Ansty (Wiltshire - UK) by Coppin Dockray Architects has been longlisted for RIBA House of the Year 2016, having already won two regional awards: the RIBA South West Award and the RIBA South West Small Project of the Year.
The retrofit and extension of a home built in the sixties in the historic village of Ansty (Wiltshire - UK) by Coppin Dockray Architects has already received two regional awards from RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), the RIBA South West Award 2016 and the RIBA South West Small Project of the Year 2016, and is on the longlist for the RIBA House of the Year 2016 award.
The home already included two buildings: a house designed in 1964 by David Levitt and a dilapidated studio and garage designed by Peter & Alison Smithson. The architects of Coppin Dockray restored the existing buildings, expanded them and improved their energy performance. The renovation project also involved reorganisation of space, removing constructions that had been altered and added over the past 50 years. The project was conducted with meticulous care and attention, proceeding with demolition where necessary to restore the home’s original architectural quality. This care was underlined by the RIBA jury, noting that “ In the house what has been taken away, and what has not been added is as important as what has been rescued or retained ”.
