Czech architects Mimosa Architekti have built a coffee shop in Prague inspired by the life of electrical engineer, inventor and businessman Frantisek Krizik. Electricity is energy connecting different systems, just as the bistro connects people.
Born in Prague’s Karlin district in the early nineteenth century, Frantisek Krizik was an important innovator, businessman and electrical engineer. In their design for the Proti Proudu Bistro, the architects of Mimosa pay homage to a man who was born in the same neighbourhood as them. The interiors of the Proti Proudu Bistro connect electricity with human life: people pass through the space at various times of day in search of energy, like electrons in motion in a circuit.
The walls are covered with plywood painted white, with holes in it forming a grid connecting all the elements present in the bistro. This makes the circuit visible: a network of electrical cables runs all over the bistro, bringing energy to each lamp separately, and the order of the switches simulates the arrangement of the lights, which are turned on and off whenever the door is opened.
The words "In coffee we trust" stand out on the bar counter, perfectly readable from all over the bistro.
