With a special focus on furniture built starting in the 1930s and ’40s, this exhibition features outstanding designs with projects by architects such as Franco Albini, Carlo Enrico Rava, Gio Ponti, Ico Parisi and more, documenting the partnership between prominent artisans’ workshops in the Cantù area and prestigious names on the Italian and international architecture scene.
The exhibition Cantu “Eccellenze di Design” is inspired by research conducted since the '80s by Alfio Terraneo and Michele Marellie focusing on partnerships between artisanal furniture-makers’ workshops and prominent twentieth-century architects. The exhibition features furniture designed by Franco Albini, Carlo Enrico Rava, Antonio Scoccimarro, Paolo Buffa, Guglielmo Ulrich, Gio Ponti, Carlo De Carli, Ico Parisi, Werner Blaser, Eero Aarnio, Ilmari Tapiovaara, Sven Staaf, Aldo Rossi, Ettore Sottsass, Umberto Riva, Raffaella Crespi, Afra and Tobia Scarpa, Bruno Munari, Pininfarina Extra, Franco Purini and others. Examples of different forms of figurative expressiveness, different construction technologies and finishes, testifying to the cultural evolution of design and, without claiming to be exhaustive, tracing a historical path in the evolution of furniture design.by Agnese Bifulco
