Dattner Architects and WXY architecture + urban design Manhattan Districts 1/2/5 Garage and Salt Shed

On New York’s Hudson River, Dattner Architects and WXY architecture + urban design designed the Manhattan Districts 1/2/5 Garage and Salt Shed, which has been presented with AIA New York’s 2016 Honor Award.

The Salt Shed is a bare concrete block in the shape of a salt crystal. The formworks for the structure were made using parametric modelling software. The highly material volume contrasts with the diaphanous metal façade of the nearby garage designed by the same architects for the District of New York.
The double skin on the garage is covered with sheets of metal. The vertical strips shelter the building from the sun and add dynamism and lightness to the construction. The green roof improves the whole building’s thermal performance and permits use of rainwater, earning the building LEED gold certification.
