Fuksas’ kaleidoscopic tower in Turin

A kaleidoscope of hanging gardens and inclined planes appears in the double skin of Fuksas’ Regione Piemonte tower in Turin: the principal features of a skyscraper that is intended to be truly innovative and not a mere formal invention.
At 202 metres, it is one of the tallest towers in Italy and its construction reveals some noteworthy details. First of all, the glass and steel façade is built like a double skin, improving control over energy conservation. While the panels inside the dual volumes of the tower permit useful reflection of light at strategic points worthy of better illumination, they also ensure less solar radiation in other parts of the building, limiting the unpleasant greenhouse effect.
These design expedients achieve a convenient compromise between one perfectly smooth façade and another made up of original sunbreaks, achieving a highly characteristic result that Fuksas himself defines as kaleidoscopic.
From far away we can see the long inclined planes winding through the inside of the building, surprising architectural elements that add a unique touch to the building’s interior design, making the simplicity of the glass prism a precious container for the architectural symbols inside it . The entire structure is made of steel and concrete, while the foundations are composed of a base plate inevitably resting on a large number of cement pilings. The particularly transparent glass recalls that of the congress centre in Rome, also known as “The cloud”, so clear it reveals its lively contents.
At the top of the tower is a hanging garden: a theme that also appears inside the tower, at a number of points, interrupting the sensation of being inside a volume composed of purely repetitive vertical constructions.
