Squad Design, new design ideas from Lebanon Squad Design, a Lebanon-based design firm, revives the 10 100 1000 project, a concept rolled out in Mexico by Francisco Torres for La Metropolitana, in order to involve 10 Lebanese designers in creating a wooden stool contained in a 35 x 35 x 35 cm cardboard box.

Attractive, practical and low-cost objects that bring together creativity and contemporary needs with artisan decor. This is the concept behind the Lebanese take on the Mexican 10 100 1000 project of designer Francisco Torres. In Lebanon - like in Mexico - the task posed to the participants of this design challenge was to use traditional techniques to craft a wooden stool, which could be carried in a cardboard box of exactly 35 x 35 x 35 cm.

When we saw the results - a wide range of expressive forms all united by the material and by the artisan craftsmanship - we realised the huge creative potential that is freed through what are to all intents and purposes simple challenges.

We see 10 stools that give us the same number of responses to our modern way of life, characterised by versatility and mobility, perfect objects for contemporary nomads who tend towards the idea of “light living”. An increasingly popular concept where sustainability doesn't just stop at materials (wood as a natural, renewable and recyclable resource) but also involves the application of time-honoured techniques and know-how, safeguarding those tradecrafts that add value to every production, and that give jobs to people.

Every stool expresses a particular mood, from the search for balance (in the static sense too) to the little extras like incorporating a “bottle rack” or side table, or doubling so it can seat two.
