Pink House, a conversion by Mezzo Atelier On the small Azorean island of São Miguel in Portugal, the architecture firm, Mezzo Atelier converted an old, early-20th-century barn into holiday accommodation, where the past and the present all come together in harmony.

Pink House by the architects Joana de Oliveira and Giacomo Mezzadri, young owners of the architecture firm called Mezzo Atelier is the end result of the makeover of an old farm building surrounded by vegetable gardens and orchards and converted holiday accommodation. The main goal of the project was to keep the character, lines and rural feel of the old building, at the same time crafting two, holiday apartments for 5-7 people that meet the contemporary needs of hospitality.
A really delicate job for Mezzo Atelier that not only designed the general architecture but was also responsible for the interiors and even the furniture made with local artisans to underscore the ties with the land.
The architects added a new extension at the end of the main building to house a small, studio apartment, and the whole complex is surrounded by a stone wall. New glazed doors and windows have been knocked out in the colourful façade, flooding the interiors with daylight and improving its connection with the context.
The ground floor of the main, two-level accommodation opens onto the outdoor space and features a sunken bedroom area, while an open living area and kitchen on the floor above make the most of the attic space. This opens onto a terrace that is the rooftop of the smaller extension.
Mezzo Atelier added new external stairs and whitened wood interiors as their own take on the vernacular architecture. They even included a sunken fire pit. The Azorean-inspired bright pink facade and the ochre used in certain parts inside are a great pop of colour and all these architectural accents are emphasised in the photos shot by the renowned Portuguese architecture photographer, Fernando Guerra.
For the interior design, the architects selected a neutral, relaxed mood dominated by locally grown Japanese cedar and custom-made furniture made from pine recycled from the site.
Pink House by Mezzo Atelier is the balanced union of local traditions and new tourist needs, generating a peaceful, very welcoming place to stay.
