KODA by Kodasema shortlisted for WAF award The prefabricated KODA house designed by Kodasema is the Estonian response to prefabricated and movable construction that we saw at the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2015. It's now one of the nine finalists shortlisted for the Small Project Prize at the World Architecture Festival.

KODA - developed by the architects, engineers and designers from Estonian studio and creative platform Kodasema is a mobile, passive, smart home. A simple building without bells and whistles that can be erected in just seven hours, and because it is modular, it can also be moved. A smart response for temporary urban projects and not just a home.

KODA is a concentration of sustainable design solutions. It is built using prefabricated concrete panels, insulated with wood and air chambers made with a controlled process to assure energy efficiency for passive homes in the Nordic climate.

The home uses surplus solar power - heat - stored in the floor and released as required; the windows take advantage of the different slant of the sun's rays throughout the year. All with the support of home automation, because the home reacts to changes in the CO2 content or humidity in the air, thereby managing heating and ventilation and making the building even more energy efficient.

You'd be surprised at how bright, warm and welcoming the wood-lined interior of KODA is, in contrast with the soft, patterned texture of the technical concrete skin of the facade.

Kodasema is an interdisciplinary response to the key questions of contemporary living, which combines sustainability and beauty, also winning over the organisers of the World Architecture Festival. We visited KODA last year during TAB 2015 (link), where the prototype was presented for the first time, and now it's one of the nine shortlisted finalists for the Small Project Prize.

We'll find out more at the awards ceremony to be held at the Arena in Berlin on 18 November 2016.
