A gym for everyone. Adapted Gym by Urbánika, Mexico Federico Campos and Oscar Chavez from Mexican architecture studio Urbánika confirm their vocation for creating shared places for everyone with “Adapted Gymnasium”, their project in the city of Chihuahua. The gym has been adapted so it can also be used by otherwise abled people.

Our readers already know the boxing gym designed by Urbánika architecture studio of Federico Campos and Oscar Chavez: located in a tough neighbourhood of the Mexican city of Chihuahua, it gives people the opportunity to forget their hardships for a moment by practising sport.

The gym for disabled and non is located in the middle of an urban park in Chihuahua, the namesake capital of the biggest state in the north of Mexico. Sitting amongst the existing trees and integrated with a landscaping project as one more way of ensuring that the building blends in with the environment, it is a new meeting point for disabled and other sports fans.

The interiors of the gym are designed to provide easy access to all the spaces, including the stands. The weights room and all the workout areas have been designed for mixed use, so they are not restricted to just the disabled - making it a great way to help people overcome fears and prejudices.

The design choices adopted by the Urbánika studio – unpainted walls and exposed installations and ducts - meant they could stick to the tight budget without being forced to do without all the facilities required by users with different disabilities. Bright colours with the help of natural light and tactile paths help users find their way around and become a strength of the architectural layout itself.

A project that stresses the importance of sport as a means of interaction and of consummate integration, right at the urban level. Once again, the Urbánika studio shows that great results can be obtained despite budget restrictions, both in terms of the architecture and from the social viewpoint; and it's all a lot different from those mega sports facilities whose positive impact on the fragile urban equilibrium is yet to be proved.
