16/40 - collective exhibition of young French artists The “16/40” exhibition in France celebrates some 16 architecture firms from among the 40 European architects and designers under 40 (40 UNDER 40) selected by the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. A great result for the upcoming generation of French architects.

An itinerant exhibition focusing on the young talents of French architecture to celebrate their huge success in the biennial award organised by the Dublin-based European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies to celebrate 40 architects under the age of 40. A panel of experienced architects, developers, journalists, teachers and critics select firms on the basis of their projects, emphasising the innovative nature of their research and the potential impact on the profession's future. The criteria used to judge the architects includes the use of the latest building technologies, the study of new materials, energy saving and respect for both the urban and the rural environment. 16 of the winners were French firms for a total of 30 architects.
Reason enough for these French architects to team up for a collective publication and exhibition at the Maison de l'architecture d'Ile-de-France in Paris, in the old chapel of Les Récollets. The exhibition showcases the three projects submitted by each firm to the 40 UNDER 40 judging panel led by Christian Narkiewicz, president of the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. So visitors can explore the common foundations of these young designers as well as their personal perspective.
Our readers are very familiar with some of this new generation, such as WY-TO studio that operates between Paris and Singapore, and in line with the approach of these young architects, the exhibition arrangement focused on a graphic presentation of the portfolio targeting a rather assorted public, ranging from architecture buffs and experts, through to municipal stakeholders and young people.
This collective and itinerant exhibition called “16/40” is proof positive of a collaborative approach that characterises a young, ambitious and creative French generation.
